BRIDAL FALLS (NEWS 1130) – An additional lane has been re-opened on Highway 1 between Bridal Falls and Hope.

At about noon Sunday, one eastbound lane was re-opened to traffic.

Continue to expect delays, as crews continue to clean up the mess from several mudslides Thursday morning.

Two lanes are open westbound and one is open eastbound — with a 50kmk/h construction speed zone in effect.

In an earlier interview with NEWS 1130 Maziar Kazemi, area manager with the Ministry of Transportation, says there were up to three slides on Thursday morning. “We’re looking at three different sites. The largest site had about 500 cubic metres of debris and the other two sites we’re looking at about half that amount.”

Kazemi says a storm passed through that area prior to the slides. “With that came a lot of precipitation, higher than average temperatures and a lot of snowmelt — that definitely saturated some of the soil. [That’s] what we’re seeing here with some of the debris. We had our geo-technical engineers assess the site and they’ve given us the all clear to do the debris removal.”

Meanwhile, just east of Hope, a snowfall warning has been issued. The Coquihalla Highway is expected to get the worst of it between Hope and Merritt. The rain should change to snow this evening with about 15 centimetres on the way overnight.

If you head north east out of Vancouver, instead of snow, expect rain, with up to 70 mm forecast for Howe Sound.
